Shawn Porter: Into the Ether

Oct 9, 2015 – Nov 7, 2015

Shawn Porter’s installations are three-dimensional sketches developed through a focus on play, material sensibility, and fabrication.  The ebb and flow of working with a variety of materials allows a sketch to gradually present itself, generating works that feel natural, effortless, and enjoyable for both maker and viewer.  Porter is intent on presenting works that are approachable to as many people as possible, encouraging engagement on various levels and entry points. Porter allows the viewer to develop their own interpretation, while his understanding of the work remains tied to his playful experience of creating the sketch.

About the Artist-in-Residence Program

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art’s long-term artist-in-residence program is designed expressly to meet the needs of artists living and working in Utah. UMOCA supports its residents by offering studio space within the museum, exclusive workshops with national artists and art professionals, and career-building opportunities. At the end of their residencies, artists have the opportunity to showcase the culmination of their work in a museum setting through a gallery dedicated to UMOCA’s artists-in-residence, the A-I-R Space.
