In Supercalafragilist , the familiar fractures under pressure, sweet things curdle, language wobbles and form becomes a site of soft collapse. These sculptures by Randi Bachman sit somewhere between ruin and confection, drawing from the lexicon of play, ornament and excess to uncover what’s tender, unstable or falling apart beneath the surface.
Made from ceramic glaze and synthetic materials, each piece leans into awkwardness and excess, courting both attraction and discomfort. The sugary palette and fantastical textures pull viewers in, only to reveal deeper seams of disorientation and vulnerability. Titles like Standing Stones, Inverted Commas and FrostFlowers: Cloud Watching suggest an unstable grammar- visual or otherwise where meaning erodes or blooms unexpectedly.
The show’s title, a warped echo of a childhood magic word proposes a new kind of spell: one that welcomes the fractured, the fragile and the unruly all at once. With a nod and a wink to a pun pointing to materiality within the field of ceramics.
