What Sustains: Landscapes for Curiosity and Connection

How do rocks, trees, and holes in the Earth sustain your daily life? Artist and researcher Nina Elder uses art to answer this question, telling honest stories about the complex connections between humans and nature. In this traveling show, students are invited to view Nina’s large-scale realistic drawings to get curious about mines and clear cut forests. These permanently changed places show a legacy of industry, both as scars in the landscape and sites that support our needs. 

The exhibition asks “What sustains?” The Earth endures, and so do the marks of human impact. Society is turning toward greater sustainability, yet we still extract our necessary materials from the planet. As the Art Truck travels around Utah, audiences will explore their relationship to the environment.

The list on the Truck’s exterior is Nina’s futile attempt to exhaustively list what sustains us: our ecosystems, networks, souls, communities, and cultural practices. Audiences are invited to contribute to an ongoing and growing list of what sustains life in Utah.

¿Cómo te mantienen las rocas, los árboles y los agujeros en la Tierra en tu vida diaria?  La artiste e investigadore Nina Elder utiliza el arte para responder a esta pregunta, contando historias sinceras sobre las conexiones complejas entre los humanos y la naturaleza. En esta exposición itinerante, se invita a los estudiantes a ver los dibujos de Nina que son realistas y de gran escala para despertar su curiosidad sobre las minas y los bosques talados. Estos lugares permanentemente cambiados muestran un legado de industria, tanto como cicatrices en el paisaje y como sitios que satisfacen nuestras necesidades.

La exposición plantea la pregunta: “¿Qué nos sostiene?” La Tierra perdura, al igual que las marcas del impacto humano. La sociedad se inclina hacia una mayor sostenibilidad, sin embargo, seguimos extrayendo los materiales necesarios de nuestro planeta. Mientras el Camión de Arte recorre Utah, el público explorará su relación con el medioambiente.

La lista en el exterior del camión es el intento infructuoso de Nina de enumerar exhaustivamente lo que nos sustenta: nuestros ecosistemas, redes, almas, comunidades y prácticas culturales. Se invita al público a contribuir a una lista en constante crecimiento de lo que sostiene la vida en Utah.
