This artwork shows the everyday movements and activities that happen in Kelly’s home with her family. She watched how each person would walk, play, rest, and do other things around the house, and turned those movements into drawings and videos. The lines in the drawings illustrate each person’s movement—some are thick or heavy or slow, others are thin or fine or quick, just like the different ways we move our bodies and interact with each other. Kelly has also sewn a hand-knit sock into one of the drawings to show how simple activities that are part of our everyday routine can bring us calm and balance, even when life becomes messy and chaotic. Her art is a way of showing how home is full of patterns, movement, and care.
Kelly Brooks teaches in the Department of Visual Arts at Snow College, where she is the head of time-based media. Brooks is the co-founder of Granary Arts in Ephraim and she directed the Museum School at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. Her work explores themes of place, time, change, and entropy through several media but focuses most on drawing, painting, video art, and animation. Selected exhibitions include the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Rio Gallery, Finch Lane Gallery, Springville Art Museum, Bountiful Davis Art Center, Utah Cultural Celebration Center, Alice Gallery, The Museum of Biblical Art, Kimball Visual Arts Center, and SMartspace. Brooks grew up in the Salt Lake Valley near the Cottonwood Canyons. She received a BFA from Brigham Young University, a certificate in Art Teaching from Weber State University, and a Master of Arts Teaching in Fine Arts from the University of Utah. She lives and works in central Utah with her husband and three children, where she collaborates on creative projects with her local and larger communities.
