The finale of the Cultural Cartographies Series transports us to the Gulf of Bothnia, off the coast of Finland, where Dutch filmmaker Guido van der Werve is shown slowly walking on thin ice, 32 feet ahead of a 3,500 ton icebreaker. The video, Nummer Acht: Everything is going to be alright (2007), points to Van der Werve’s affinity for challenging the unpredictability of nature and presenting the sublime. As the ship carves a path of destruction, the artist references the unyielding path of progress, the capitalist networks of global trade, and a landscape on the verge of disappearing.

Through this form of investigation, Cultural Cartographies reveals how artists negotiate understandings of space and place, using technologies of vision, that shape social and natural environments.
