Instrumentos de silencio (Instruments of Silence) brings together works inspired by art and history to explore how opposite cultures meet and how those moments of dramatic contact are shaped by tools and technologies. The exhibition from Argentina focuses on music as a way knowledge is stored, passed on, and transformed.
The works showcase diverse materials and methods—old and new—including paper cutting, digital collage, 3D printing, photography, and printing on steel. Together, they reference a wide range of sound-making and recording tools: ancient death whistles, the first published musical score in the Western hemisphere, early recording devices, antiquated pipe organs, and even early computers and their surprising connections to music.
Rather than blending cultures into a unified story, Instrumentos de silencio highlights their uneasy, chaotic coexistence. The exhibition acknowledges the lasting effects of colonization, including the disruption and erasure of Indigenous knowledge, while also recognizing the creative spark that emerges from cultural exchanges.
Brother-and-sister artists from Buenos Aires, Gonzalo Javier Silva and Susana Isabel Silva, were winners of the 2023 Prize of The Ariel Bybee Endowment at the Center for Latter-day Saint Arts, and this exhibition is the result of their winning proposal. It was first exhibited at Sargent’s Daughters gallery in New York City before traveling to the Graduate Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California, and now to the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
