Al Denyer’s exhibition Shifting Terrain, Mapping Place explores how maps picture and interpret landscapes. Denyer uses the visual language of cartography, especially the contour lines that trace changes in height and depth in the land, inviting the viewer to think about how space and distance are represented on a flat surface.
Today, advanced digital tools can produce precise 3D models of geological spaces, yet the act of reading and imagining from two-dimensional maps remains a deeply human experience. Denyer’s work is drawn to the moments when these technologies falter—when digital mapping glitches, creating false landscapes that don’t exist. These slips may appear as a warped rock or hillside, subtle enough to pass unnoticed, yet revealing an alternative, uncanny terrain.
By combining traditional mapping lines with these accidental digital distortions in her practice, Denyer asks us to reflect on the border between the real and the imagined, and how both shape our understanding of place.
