Sol LeWitt x Cornelius Cardew: Treatise

Aug 28, 2026 6–8:30 PM

Join UMOCA and the Interdisciplinary Arts Collective (IAC) for a rare, intermedial performance of Cornelius Cardew’s seminal 1967 graphic score, Treatise. Presented in dialogue with the National Gallery of Art’s loan of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing No. 309, this immersive event celebrates two pivotal conceptual figures who fundamentally expanded the definitions of visual art, musical notation, and instruction-based systems.

The evening begins at 6:00 PM with a brief opening talk at LeWitt’s Wall Drawing No. 39, framing the dynamic intersection between visual art and experimental music before moving into the Main Gallery for the performance.

This is a durational, site-fluid performance that moves throughout the museum space. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Audience members are encouraged to move freely, entering and exiting the space throughout the 2-hour duration.

About the Artists

Cornelius Cardew (1936–1981) was an influential British composer whose work radically redefined notational practices and the social dynamics of performance, bridging mid-century avant-garde experimentation and systemic graphic composition.

Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) was a seminal figure in Minimalist and Conceptual art whose work prioritized ideas, logic, and systems over traditional physical objects. He is best known for his instruction-based wall drawings, which challenged conventional notions of artistic authorship by allowing others to realize his visual directions

Interdisciplinary Arts Collective (IAC) is a Salt Lake City–based performance ensemble dedicated to collaborative, genre-blurring works that combine music, dance, visual art, and literature.
