Since the 1980s, the Great Salt Lake has shrunk in size by over two thirds. Referred to as an “Environmental Nuclear Bomb” in The New York Times, the Great Salt Lake’s disappearance is symbolic of growing environmental concerns that affect us all. As the Lake Fades features artists looking at land and water use in the West, humans’ relationship to place, and the role of “landscape” in contemporary art amid the Anthropocene. Specifically, the exhibition considers what Utah looks like without the lake and what effect the circumstances of its disappearance might have.
