In a fruitless search for the unmediated self, Donnelly’s work investigates the frameworks through which individuals and groups perceive, respond to, and categorize objects. Viewers recognize her uncanny sculptures as familiar and expect them to function in a specific way. However, the objects withhold the function that their forms suggest they might deliver. By asking her viewers to examine the discomfort that arises when her sculptures fail to achieve full resolution, she prompts them to ask themselves “why is this so weird for me?”
Donnelly graduated in 2018 from the University of Utah with a BFA in Sculpture Intermedia.
